Renowned photographer Stephen Wilkes will discuss his incredible career and body of work with a special focus on his brand new image of Nantucket from his “Day to Night" series, followed by a Q&A.
Best known for his ongoing and most defining series "Day to Night" which he began in 2009, Wilkes has received countless honors and awards for his epic landscapes and cityscapes that employ a fixed camera angle for up to 30 hours to capture the passage of light over the course of a full day. Taking thousands of individual photographs from an elevated vantage point, Wilkes then selects his favorite moments and carefully weaves them together over several months to produce one composite image.
The Nantucket Atheneum and the C+C Photography Gallery are pleased to host the artist talk on July 7th, at the Nantucket Atheneum where Wilkes will discuss his experience creating the "Day to Night" series over the past 14 years.
About the artist:
Since opening his studio in New York City in 1983, Stephen Wilkes has built an unprecedented body of work and a reputation as one of America’s most iconic photographers. A series known as Day to Night has come to define Wilkes’s career since its 2009 inception. These epic cityscapes and landscapes, portrayed from a fixed camera angle for up to 30 hours, capture fleeting moments of humanity as light passes in front of his lens over the course of a full day. Wilkes captures thousands of individual photographs from an elevated vantage point, then selects his favorite moments from a 24-hour period and, over the course of several months, weaves them together into a composite image. In the Summer of 2022, Wilkes turned his focus to the island of Nantucket, capturing the passage of day to night rounding Brant Point. The new Nantucket, Day to Night, photograph debuts at C+C Photography, as part of a feature exhibition of the artist's work, on view starting July 6, 2023 at 30 A Main Street. Day to Night has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning as well as dozens of other prominent media outlets and, with a grant from the National Geographic Society, was recently extended to include America’s National Parks in celebration of their centennial anniversary and Bird Migration for the 2018 Year of the Bird.
