Author Talk: Joan Maloof- A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests

Dr. Joan Maloof, an expert on old-growth forests, will be giving a talk about her newest book on Thursday, July 26 at 6:30 pm in the Atheneum. Maloof’s book is titled Nature’s Temples: A Natural History of Old-Growth Forests (Princeton University Press), and copies will be available for sale and signing.

Maloof is the great-great-great-great niece of Maria Mitchell, the first U.S. woman astronomer. The author grew up visiting relatives on the island, and in the summer of 1975 she followed in Mitchell’s footsteps and participated in research at the Maria Mitchell observatory. Soon after that summer Maloof’s scientific studies turned away from the stars and toward the plants on the Earth’s surface. She is now a professor emeritus of biology and environmental studies at Salisbury University, an author of six books, and the founder of the Old-Growth Forest Network, a national nonprofit organization. On Nantucket her organization partnered with the Nantucket Conservation Foundation to bring national recognition to the Squam Swamp.
