In celebration of Pride Month and in collaboration with the Linda Loring Foundation, please join
us in the Great Hall for a riveting lecture "Queer Ecology: How Nature Defies Expectations.”
Using a queer lens, this presentation will celebrate the diversity of the natural world and present
scientific examples of species that defy society’s expectations of biological sex, social structure,
and sexual orientation. Despite taxonomic efforts to strictly classify species into groups, the
reality of nature is much more fluid. Rather than treating these examples as ‘exceptions’ we will
demonstrate that the processes of adaptation and evolution lead to a vast variety of life strategies.
We will also ground this presentation in local examples from Nantucket, to appreciate the
diversity of life here on island.
