Event Details

Award-winning historical biographer, Flora Fraser, is delighted to present her latest book, Pretty Young Rebel: The Life of Flora Macdonald, at the Nantucket Atheneum. She is grateful too that the National Trust of Scotland USA is supporting this lecture about the formidable 18th century heroine whose name is familiar to Scots the world over. Flora Macdonald’s enthralling life combined daring adventures with Bonnie Prince Charlie on the Isle of Skye in 1746 and a later struggle for survival during the American Revolution, after emigrating to North Carolina. It is a tale of boldness and daring, wit and charm, adversity and endurance, and of a woman who showed extraordinary courage in the face of great danger.

Flora Fraser’s previous historical biographies include: Beloved Emma: The Life of Emma, Lady Hamilton; Princesses: The Daughters of George III; The Washingtons: George and Martha, which won the 2016 George Washington Book Prize. See florafraser.com for more details. Previously a Trustee of the London National Portrait Gallery, Flora is a member of the Royal Historical Society, and has an honorary Doctorate from King’s College London. The Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography, which Flora co-founded with Peter Soros in 2003 in affectionate memory of her late grandmother, the biographer of Queen Victoria and the Duke fo Wellington, is now in its 21st year. See elhb.uk for more details.
